Ray
Bradbury, the writer of the short story, “The Drummer Boy of Shiloh” made the
main character brave. Joby, the main character is a 14 year old and plays the
drums for the soldiers that will fight in the war. Joby was faithful and courageous
throughout the story even when time were difficult.
An
example of when Joby was courageous was when the general said “You’ll run them
through for me then boy” and then Joby said “Yes, sir.” This shows that Joby
was courageous because Joby accepted his request even though he was scared.
Joby knew what he was getting into, he knew what the drummer boy’s job was, he
also knew that there was a possibility that he could die.
An
example of Joby having faith was when Joby knew he was defenseless and
vulnerable; he still ended up not listening to his weak side and had faith in
himself. That was when he thought to himself “I only got a drum, two sticks to
beat it, and no shield.” This showed that Joby didn’t want to go near the
battle field because of the danger and he also didn’t want to beat his drums
for the soldiers because he didn’t have faith. But in the end Joby had faith in
himself and decided that he will beat his drum in the danger.
In
conclusion, Joby was courageous because he accepted the general’s offer and
Joby was also faithful because he had faith in himself and decided that he will
go to the war zone and beat his drum. Some things in life are difficult and terrifying
and Joby was able to face something like that. Joby had to do something that
could have killed him. I think that since Joby was able to something that frightening
I will be able to something not as deadly but still difficult. Joby did the
right thing by beating the drum for the soldiers and risking his life which I
think made him really brave.
